A homage to χωριάτικη και σουβλάκι

Today’s prompt is Food for the Soul (and the Stomach). Tell us about your favourite meal, either to eat or to prepare. Does it just taste great, or does it have other associations?

Ask me this any time of day–except when I’ve had a drink and craving a pizza–and it will always be χωριάτικη και κοτόπουλο σουβλάκι (Greek salad and chicken souvlaki).

Growing up in Athens, chicken souvlaki and Greek salad were always a staple in my diet. It’s “cheap and cheerful” as my mum always puts it. As a meal on its own, it was eaten almost (and I’m not exaggerating) every Friday and Saturday evening at our favourite taverna, Ζάχος. Can you tell we love it? You can find this at any Greek restaurant or taverna, and both are great accompanied by τζατζίκι (tzatziki).

To answer the above questions yes, it tastes great, but it also makes me feel connected to Greek culture and gives me that homely feeling. If you ever visit Greece I would recommend χωριάτικη και κοτόπουλο σουβλάκι με τζατζίκι!
