London: Borough Market and Camden

On our last day we took the tube to South Bank. The weather wasn’t great; it was cold and raining but we still managed a leisurely stroll to Borough Market.

Borough Market, Southwark

Borough Market is rich in history, and one of London’s oldest markets. To this day it operates underneath the historic 1860s railway viaduct and welcomes traders serving up cuisine from around the world. I didn’t manage to get any photos because it was manic; it was the weekend and people were trying to take shelter from the rain. We wandered around the stalls taking in the blend of wonderful smells and aromas (and snagging some free samples). I had a salted caramel white chocolate chip cookie and it was delicious! I stood in a corner devouring every last crumb and I was eager to try something else. Next, we sampled the olive oils and vinegars at The Olive Oil Co, who sell specialist Italian produce. My favourite had to be the lemon infused extra virgin olive oil. I enjoyed the white truffle extra virgin olive oil but the taste was so pungent it lingered on my tongue for hours.

From there we made our way to Camden Market, a world-famous market destination with stalls trading in clothes, accessories, funky memorabilia and miscellaneous gadgets, music and international cuisine.

I knew exactly where I wanted to go for food– Kalimera. Translates to good morning in Greek (Καλημέρα). They have 12 locations around London so you can’t miss them. We came here last time and it’s pretty close to authentic Greek food. I ordered the chicken gyros (γύρο κοτόπουλο) and Natalie ordered a halloumi wrap (χαλούμι σε πίτα).

I completely didn’t realise there was another Greek stall– The Grilling Greek. I’ll vow to go there next time.

Next up: The Doughnut Cart

You will struggle to find cronuts and doughnuts bigger and better than these! And at £2 you can’t go wrong. Me and Natalie shared a salted caramel doughnut (notice a trend here?) and it was insane. Best I’ve ever had. The bread was soft and fluffy, and the caramel filling was sweet and salty– you’d be daft not to try one.

Next on the agenda is Egypt: Hurghada and Cairo!
